Is Atlatl Hunting Legal in Your State? A State-by-State Guide

Is Atlatl Hunting Legal in Your State? A State-by-State Guide

You've got your atlatl. You've been throwing darts in the backyard and you're getting good. Now you're wondering: can I actually hunt with this thing?

The answer depends almost entirely on where you live. Atlatl hunting legality varies wildly from state to state — some states explicitly allow it, some explicitly ban it, and a surprising number have never even addressed it in their wildlife code. Here's what we know.

The Short Answer

Atlatl hunting is not federally regulated. The ATF doesn't classify atlatls as firearms, and there's no blanket federal prohibition. That means it comes down to your state's fish and wildlife regulations — and those vary enormously.

States Where Atlatl Hunting Is Permitted

Alabama

Alabama explicitly permits atlatl use for taking game. According to the state's Law Enforcement Section, the regulation only requires that a spear be hand-thrown — which means an atlatl qualifies. Alabama is one of the clearest "yes" states in the country.

Alaska

Alaska's regulations don't prohibit atlatl use. According to the state's wildlife agency, an atlatl can be used statewide in hunts that don't have specific weapons restrictions. You'll still need to follow all other regulations — correct season, correct species, correct location — but the tool itself is legal.

Missouri

Good news if you're a Missouri hunter: atlatls are legal during prescribed hunting seasons. Missouri regulation CSR 10-7.410 specifically permits atlatl use, placing it alongside slings and slingshots as an approved method of take. As a Missouri-based company, this one is close to our hearts.

Idaho (Limited)

Idaho allows atlatl use for a couple of specific purposes: spearing tagged carp during regular fishing season (with a fishing license) and hunting forest grouse (with a small game license). It's not open season for big game, but there's more flexibility here than in many states.

Illinois (Fishing Only)

Illinois prohibits atlatl use for hunting but allows it for spearing rough fish — carp, carpsuckers, buffalo, sucker, gar, and bowfin. Not a hunting win, but worth knowing for anglers.

Delaware (Fishing Only)

Delaware allows atlatl use for fishing but not hunting. Their wildlife code is specific about approved hunting methods, and the atlatl doesn't make the list.

States Where Atlatl Hunting Is Prohibited

Arkansas

The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission is direct: there is no regulation or season in Arkansas where atlatl use is legal for hunting or fishing. Full stop.

Connecticut

Connecticut's hunting regulations restrict legal methods to firearms, high-velocity air guns, and compound, long, or recurve bows. The atlatl doesn't fit any of those categories and is therefore not permitted.

Florida

Florida lists its approved hunting methods explicitly: rifles, shotguns, pistols, longbows, compound bows, recurve bows, crossbows, and birds of prey. The atlatl is not on that list and cannot be used legally for hunting in the state.

Michigan

Michigan does not permit atlatl hunting. Check the DNR website directly for the most current regulations, as Michigan updates its rules regularly.

States That Are Gray Areas

A large number of states haven't explicitly addressed the atlatl in their wildlife code. In most of these cases, if the atlatl isn't listed as an approved method for taking game, it's considered illegal by omission — but it pays to call your state's fish and wildlife agency directly to confirm.

California is a good example: there's no direct code reference to atlatls, but the state essentially categorizes them as spears. No big or small game may be taken with a spear, but non-game species (coyotes, rodents, opossum) can be. Spear fishing is legal in ocean waters.

The Golden Rule: Always Verify Before You Hunt

Wildlife regulations change every year. What was prohibited in 2020 might be permitted in 2025, and vice versa. Before you head out to hunt with your atlatl:

  1. Contact your state's fish and wildlife agency directly. A 5-minute phone call can keep you out of serious legal trouble.
  2. Download the current season's regulation booklet from your state DNR website.
  3. Ask specifically about atlatls — many phone operators won't recognize the word immediately. Describing it as "a spear-thrower" or "a hand-held lever used to throw a dart or spear" tends to get clearer answers.
  4. Check local ordinances too. Even where state law permits atlatl use, county or municipal codes may restrict discharging projectile weapons in certain areas.

Why This Matters for Hunters

The atlatl isn't just a novelty — it's a legitimate primitive hunting tool with a strong following in the archery and traditional hunting community. Several states that have added atlatl seasons have found it fills a unique niche: it's more challenging than firearms, more powerful than many bows at close range, and deeply connected to North American hunting heritage.

If your state doesn't currently permit atlatl hunting and you'd like to see that change, connecting with your state wildlife agency and organizations like the World Atlatl Association is the most effective path forward. Regulations have changed before. They'll change again.
